The Graveyard Shift
The Graveyard Shift is a rather anti-heroic, yet well meaning and highly effective, group of young superheroes. They are mutants who were slain by Sentinels in assorted ways for assorted reasons. The lich Alice Danvers, who by the night is known as Suffer, raised them from the dead into ageless, deathless, regenerating flesh-hungry zombies.
The team now slates their hunger on those who perpetuate ignorance and injustice against mutants, or whomsoever seems to most deserve it when the need arises. They exist to protect mutants, and the weak and persecuted - however, their driving goal is vengeance against the giant hate-machines that killed them in the first place.
They 'live' on the property of Alice's family mortuary. At the ffar reaches of the property lies a mausoleum with an ancient graveyard aroud it; no one can afford to be put to rest in it, and no one is left alive to care for those resting here, so the area has overgrown with brush and thorns and no living sentient wanders there. Inside, it is a cozy enough place to be dead, set up with running water and electricty and internet access. A few of the ancient dead are propped up and known by name; they are sometimes in different places but it is unknown if they move or if Alice is simply moving them.
The dead are Charlie, Carol, Eustace, Vivian, and Silas, apparently very intersting people from many decades ago, but they only ever seem to talk to Alice.
The members of the Shift, in general, do not get to see their families, homes, or anyone they knew in life. They must eat human flesh every other day or so, however they can eat other things. Assuming they are well fed, they pass for weird humans - until they twist their mouths into huge fanged grins. Still, they have taken the transition to their new existence well, they appreciate and follow Alice, and are not bitter about what they have lost. Why?
They are driven by vengeance. It wakes them up in the morning and soothes them to sleep at night. Vengeance is their blood and their air and their purpose, and all that they have lost and all that they have become helps them toward that end and so it is welcome. In fact, each member of the Shift has a special ability called the Death Throes, enchanting the wound that felled them. What didn't kill them made stronger; what DID kill them made them unstoppable.
As dark as this sounds, most of the day they are just a varied group of close friends, held together by one or two things they have in common.
The Graveyard Shift, they ARE the good guys. However, being dead and hungry for flesh, their relative 'Good' is different. They strive for the ideal of not killing anyone who is particularly too bad.
