SO there has been some contention of what time period the Narutoverse actually exists in. I have my own personal favorite, but I'd like to offer it up for public opinion before I pick one.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Option 1: The universe takes place during the Edo period.
-Pro: Explains why everyone sticks with traditional Japanese lifestyle.
-Con: Fails to explain lots of stuff; Ear-radios, injection-molded rubber sandal soles, Orichimaru's genetics labs - the Edo period ended in 1867 and the zipper that hold Naruto's jumpsuit on wasn't invented till 1913.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Option 2: The universe takes place in modern day and the nations and villages are hidden away from the modern world. They choose to keep a large society of traditional behavior ongoing so as not to spoil their ninja and their people on the crutches of modern technology. Mennonite Ninjas. Factory-made items such as the shoes and radios are purchased from the cities. Many missions are done in the cities, but we don't see them in the show because 1) they're just not as interesting and 2) they don't want to take genin into the city until their traditional values are set.
*Note: This would not go to say that the ninja would hang out in a city setting or go there for anything beyond short missions. The RP would still be centered on the villages and most citizens wouldn't even know of the cities.
-Pro: Explains all the tech in the show.
-Pro: Allows for the Village Hidden in the Towers to be part of the game.
-Con: Never confirmed or denied in the canon.
-Con: Even if incoming tech is tightly limited, some players may be weirded out if a the occasional ninja has an e-reader or motorcycle or gameboy.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Option 3: The universe takes place in no given time period and the tech level is random as suitable. The tech level is capped at an agreeable level; perhaps no firearms, video screens, or internal combustion.
-Pro: Easy way out
-Pro: Sort-of matches the show.
-Con: Doesn't really resolve anything, still leaves us open to a lot of bickering down the road about individual items.
